Your first stop will be a visit to Saxman Native Village. For generations, Tlingit villages have maintained a tradition of welcoming visitors in regal style In this Native community, tribal elders and others have worked hard to pass on many of the traditions that have long defined their culture. Join a Tlingit guide for an enlightening walk through Ketchikan, during which you will hear about the city’s history and how the indigenous people have adapted to the changes. The guide will explain the meaning of the many totem poles scattered about town. Some totems tell legends while others trace family histories or commemorate the lives of elders. As you meander along the wooden boardwalks of Creek Street, the former red-light district, the guide will explain why the street was constructed over water and how it developed. You will also walk Married Man’s Trail, a spur off Creek Street that was once an escape route used by men that couldn’t afford to be caught in the brothels. However, the historical Painted Church was spared during Kīlauea’s eruption in 1990 when the entire structure was lifted off its foundation and moved to safety. While browsing the wooden church, which features wonderful painted ceiling frescoes, you will hear more about its salvation. You will also visit a newly formed black-sand beach to learn intriguing details about the volcanic eruption that created it. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to shop for locally made merchandise and meander along Hilo Bay.

Your experience begins with a short walk along the fishing pier of Ketchikan, a historic fishing port and the gateway to Alaska. Gain an understanding of the Big Island’s history through attractions that highlight the life of the early Hawaiians and the influence of Catholic missionaries. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will offer a glimpse into the early culture, as it was a place of refuge for those that had violated the sacred laws known as kapu. There, you will see a temple where criminals could be absolved of their transgressions and safely return to society. To complement the experience, you will visit the 19th-century Painted Church. Its interior features frescoes and murals of biblical scenes that a Belgian priest painted to teach the islanders Catholicism. The missionaries were also instrumental in dismantling the harsh kapu laws. You will also learn how coffee was introduced to Hawaii in the 1820s and how it is processed today at the Royal Kona Coffee Center. It is an excellent setting to enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed Kona coffee.

Enjoy tastings of two classic Hawaiian products – coffee and chocolate – and see how both are produced to maximize their unique flavors. At Kona Joe Coffee, you will learn about the patented cultivation process that allows the trellised Arabica coffee trees to grow upright like grapevines, which ensures uniform sun exposure. The result is a superior organic coffee bean with an enhanced taste and body, as you will discover by sampling a fresh-brewed cup. You will be treated to another sampling at the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory, the first plantation in the state to grow and process 100% Hawaiian cacao chocolate. While touring the orchards, you will see how the cacao is nurtured and then witness the various steps of production in the factory. A tasting follows, during which you might sample delectable plumeria-shaped pieces of chocolate, bite-size cacao nibs and dark criollo chocolate with a complex earthy character. The on-site chocolate shop may be hard to resist.

Your adventure starts by viewing historical points of interest while off shore from the village of Kailua-Kona. While zipping down the coast on these fast and fun Zodiac Hurricanes, you will stop to interact with dolphins and other marine life. The dolphins that are seen on a daily basis are the Hawaiian Spinner dolphins. You may encounter Pacific Bottlenose and Spotted dolphins. As well as the seasonal Humpback whales that migrate yearly from Alaska (Jan-Apr), you may also find pilot whales, false killer whales and other rare, elusive whales that live here year-round. When you are in the Zodiac, you are just 2 feet above the water line, so you have a great vantage point from which to view the marine life.
