Pass through the visually stunning countryside in the Puna district just outside Hilo, where you will see lava fields from past eruptions and an extraordinary black-sand beach composed of lava fragments. According to legend, the volatile Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele lives in the district’s Kīlauea volcano. She not only creates new land, but also destroys what stands in the path of the lava, which is known as “frozen fire” once it cools and hardens. However, the historical Painted Church was spared during Kīlauea’s eruption in 1990 when the entire structure was lifted off its foundation and moved to safety. While browsing the wooden church, which features wonderful painted ceiling frescoes, you will hear more about its salvation. You will also visit a newly formed black-sand beach to learn intriguing details about the volcanic eruption that created it. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to shop for locally made merchandise and meander along Hilo Bay.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of historical Wailuku, where you will stop in a variety of unpretentious restaurants and locales to sample pure Hawaiian specialties. Sit back and enjoy the sights along the famed Hana Highway without having to navigate the twisting, curving road yourself. Put on your swimsuit and hop aboard a catamaran for the channel crossing to Molokini, a tiny crescent of an island just off the Maui coast and one of the top ten snorkel sites in the world. It is all that remains above water of a volcanic crater that resulted from an eruption some 200,000 years ago. Explore a lush reef with colorful coral combinations found nowhere else in these islands and home to more than 250 species of fish.

Check out Maui’s massive Haleakala volcano from bottom to top, as you journey from sea level to the summit to view spectacular island scenery and the immense crater of volcanic rock. You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up. The Hawaiians revere it as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos.

Combine all the highlights of West Maui on this comprehensive excursion: Iao Valley, Maui Tropical Plantation and the Maui Ocean Center. You'll start with a visit to the most well-known and beautiful gorge on the ‘Valley Isle,’ the Iao Valley. Upon arriving at the nearby island of Tahaa, it’s a short walk to reach the vanilla plantation.
