The intrigue begins as you board your air-conditioned coach at the pier and travel southeast through picturesque countryside and lively cities. You're headed to the village of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that closely resembles a movie set. Whitewashed buildings with grey roofs lend the village a magical atmosphere, and more than 1,400 cone-shaped buildings known as trulli dot the cobblestone streets and hillsides. Walk through the town and learn about its history, which began in the Bronze Age. Thousands of years ago, residents built their homes out of the only material available -- limestone. Made without mortar, they could easily be torn down and rebuilt. According to UNESCO, they're an "exceptional example of vernacular architecture," which "represents a remarkable survival of prehistoric building techniques." Although these beguiling structures are scattered around the Apulia region, it's Alberobello that's considered the 'trulli capital'. Many of the trulli boast roofs adorned with painted symbols, such as a cross or a heart pierced by an arrow, to bring luck to the house. The Old Town alone boasts about 1,000 dwellings lining the winding streets and climbing the hillside -- the views from the top are awe-inspiring.

In Bari you'll find bustling metropolis dotted with popular shops and restaurants. A prosperous port since antiquity, Bari has seen its share of history -- a who's who of conquerors have left an indelible imprint on the city. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Normans all took advantage of Bari's strategic location, and the Crusaders often sailed from Bari in the Middle Ages. Evidence of this illustrious past can be seen in the Old Town -- Bari Vecchia. Among its winding streets are a number of breathtaking medieval structures, including the Basilica of St Nicolas (1087), named for Bari's patron saint. Enjoy a walk through this lovely Romanesque church, whose treasures include the remains of the revered saint, carved stone doorways, an elaborate stone canopy over the altar, and a 900-year-old marble bishop's throne.

Discover a world of intriguing architecture with a visit to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Italy is best known for its amazing Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman architecture but, tucked between the hills and valleys of southern Italy, stands a reminder that some of its earliest occupants created their own type of dwellings with just the materials at hand.

Board an air-conditioned coach and take the scenic coastal route to the town of Trani, known as "the slow town" because of its laid-back charm and easy-going manner.

In the Eternal City, a panoramic drive takes you through the lovely Borghese Gardens and along Via Veneto -- Rome's famous, elegant and outrageously expensive shopping street. A slice of Roman life takes place among the fashionable sidewalk cafés, luxury shops and up-market hotels here.

Drive to the heart of Rome, passing St Paul's Basilica, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Circus Maximus and stopping at the Trevi Fountain.

In the Eternal City, enter the vast expanse of St Peter's Square through Bernini's Colonnade, and step into Christendom's largest church, St Peter's Basilica. In the apse is the splendid gilt and bronze throne, also designed by Bernini. Take time to see the Pietà, Michelangelo's masterpiece in white marble.

Begin your tour with a drive to Tarquinia, founded in the 7th century BC, and now known as a magnificent Etruscan burial ground. You will see the Palazzo Vitelleschi -- an excellent example of early Renaissance architecture, whose Archeological Museum houses the remains of the mysterious Etruscan population. Visit the necropolis, containing thousands of tombs dating from the 6th to the 1st century BC, many of which have not yet been explored.

In Rome you will visit the Catacombs, a curious underground maze of tunnels where the early Christians were buried. This is essentially a vast underground cemetery -- a series of subterranean passageways that form real labyrinths that are several miles long.

Meet your coach nearby and head for the beautiful Palazzo Brancaccio -- the last Roman patrician palace built in 1880 in the heart of the Eternal City. It stands on Colle Oppio, the ancient Roman hill near Emperor Nero's Domus Aurea, between the Colosseum and the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Its grounds are a beautiful old park surrounding the Roman ruins, with centuries-old plants and fountains, pine trees, palms and laurels. Here you can admire the small but charming Hunting Lodge, full of rich decorations. Inside the palace you'll find enchanting banquet rooms where Princess Cruises Mary Elisabeth Brancaccio gave sumptuous parties. Roman Holiday was filmed inside the halls of the Palazzo Brancaccio.

At the birthplace of the Olympic Games, it's easy to imagine the roar of the spectators as the athletes took their marks on the marble starting blocks, and to picture the temples, treasuries, porticoes, and statues of the day. The scene was dominated by the Temple of Zeus, with its 40-foot statue of the god, the ruins of which you will see today.

The park-like grounds of the sanctuary of Olympia will take you back 2,000 years to a time when this very area was crowded with athletes, orators, merchants and philosophers. The backdrop was the Temple of Zeus -- famous for its forty-foot statue of the god himself, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple lies in ruins today. As you explore, it is quite easy to imagine the roar of the spectators as the athletes pitted their own abilities against those of worthy rivals. With some help from your guide, the remains of temples, treasuries, porticoes and statues help to bring the site to life.

Focusing on small-scale farming, the family prides itself in maintaining great agricultural traditions. Magna Grecia Farm sprawls across the heart the agricultural region of Olympia. You'll visit the olive grove, learn the history of the olive tree, and taste the peppery olives produced on the property. You'll see the vineyards and encounter farm animals, as well.

One hundred acres of vineyard, set in a beautiful and verdant valley in the Olympia region, enjoy a special, moderate microclimate. This is where you'll find the Olympia Gi Winery, known for its magnificent location. Tour the vineyards and learn about the different varieties and cultivation methods inspired by the traditions of the ancient Greeks. This modern family-run winery produces quality vintages. Take in the beauty and charm of the vineyards while enjoying a taste of Olympia Gi wine.

In Gozo, food is grown on the island and is still prepared in mostly traditional ways. Family recipes have been passed down for generations using fresh natural products such as sundried tomatoes, olive oil, fresh cheeses and fragrant herbs.

Begin your tour with a drive to the Ggantija Temples in Xaghra, which are one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maltese Islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The well-preserved site consists of two temples dating back to between 3600 and 3200 BC. Pre-dating Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, they represent a phenomenal ancient culture and are considered to be one of the oldest freestanding monuments in the world. Enter via the newly-constructed Interpretative Center, which helps to put context around the mysterious civilization that built the temples. From here, walk with your guide to explore the site via a pathway that provides terrific views of the natural landscape surrounding Ggantija.

Board a motor boat on the pier in Gozo for a short crossing to the Blue Lagoon. This world-famous maritime landmark is located between the islands of Malta and Gozo.

The small island of Gozo is an entirely unique destination with a huge historical footprint. It has open spaces, magical seascapes and some of the oldest freestanding man-made structures in the world. One of the best ways to discover all of this is by open-top 4x4 vehicle.

A Dutch-speaking guide leads this tour (or a guide with a Dutch interpreter). A limited number of Dutch guides and interpreters are available in this port; book early to avoid disappointment. The beautiful Antica Masseria is an ancient farm not far from town and in the heart of the Sicilian countryside. On arrival at the baglio, you'll be welcomed by the charming Baroness Di Salvo, who will tell you about the ancient house. You'll visit the 18th-century baglio (country house) and the small church consecrated as a Sacred Family Oratory, where mass is still celebrated. Enjoy the shade of old palms, weeping willows, climbing roses and wisteria. The atmosphere of the farm and the house captures the essence of Italian nobility and the charm of a bygone era.

Drive through the main streets of Palermo and along the coast. You'll pass through Favorita Park -- former home of Ferdinand III of Bourbon, who fled from Naples in 1798 with his wife Marie Caroline. They took refuge here on the slopes of Mount Pellegrino and called their estate Favorita.

One of Sicily's most charming resorts is located on the northern coast of Sicily, halfway between Palermo and Capo d'Orlando. Cefalu is best explored on foot, so you'll leave your coach for a guided walking tour through this fine example of a medieval city, with narrow streets and elaborate architecture.

This excursion begins with a panoramic drive through of Palermo giving you the chance to admire its most beautiful monuments: Teatro Politeama, Teatro Massimo, the Quattro Canti, the Royal Palace and Piazza Pretoria. You'll then visit the impressive catacombs of the Capuchin Friars, where more than 8,000 mummified bodies of monks, noblemen and citizens are dressed in their original 15th-century clothes. The most disconcerting sight is the near-perfectly preserved body of Rosalia Lombardo, who died in 1920 at the tender age of two.

Tour the amazing city of Palermo, beginning with a ride from the pier to the downtown core, and discover a city that was a Phoenician stronghold and a Roman trading center. Reminders of all the city's conquerors exist still -- there are traces of Roman, Arab and Norman monuments to be seen. Visit the cathedral, built in 1185 by an English Archbishop. Under Muslim rule it became a mosque and was later re-consecrated to Christianity. In its chapel there is a silver urn containing the remains of St Rosalia.

This panoramic motor coach drive features the best of Palermo's sights at a relaxed pace. Begin with a ride to the central part of town. Highlights you will see include the Norman Palace, which began life in the Saracen period, but was altered by the Norman kings. View the magnificent cathedral, built in the 12th century by an archbishop, and transformed into a mosque during the Muslim era. Housing six royal tombs, the basilica was restored to the hands of Christianity by the Normans. The remains of Palermo's protector, St Rosalia, are stored in the chapel in an urn of pure silver.

Begin with the Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). Had this now-ruined temple ever been completed, it would have been one of the largest in the ancient world. The entablature was supported by 55-foot-tall columns, between which stood colossal statues. One of these is now on display in the Archeological Museum.
