There are many versions of how the stone came to be placed in the castle; the most likely is that it is half of the stone of Scone (which currently resides in Westminster Abbey in London, England) and was brought back from the crusades.

Leave the roadway and meander down a leafy path, flanked on one side by the lapping waters of the harbour and the other by a lushly sloping grove. A flotilla of swans may even swim by! This half-day tour offers the wonderful opportunity to soak up some of Ireland's beautiful countryside, as well as a visit to a 17th-century fortification.
