For those looking to educate themselves about the surroundings, take the Ixchel's Walk, a self-guided botanical trail where you can learn about the many medicinal uses of the native plants.

One of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, the Belize Barrier Reef is comprised of 70 hard coral species and 36 soft coral species and is home to 500 species of fish, with many more still to be discovered. Charles Darwin described it as "the most remarkable barrier reef in the West Indies" in 1842. A large portion of the reef is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and offers incredible diving and snorkeling opportunities. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1996 due to its spectacular beauty and ecological and biological significance.

Your knowledgeable tour guide will entertain you with interesting facts on the history culture, geography, flora and fauna of this very diverse country as you travel out of the city and 30 miles along the George Pirice Highway before arriving at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo is the perfect way to experience what the untamed jungles and savannahs have to offer. The Tropical Education Center was started in 1983 as an attempt to provide a home for various wild animals that had been featured in documentary films about the rainforest. From the very beginning, it was apparent that Belizeans were not familiar with the different species of wildlife that shared their country and all efforts were made to transform the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center. Today, the Belize Zoo covers approximately 29 acres of tropical savannah and features over 125 animal's native to Belize, many of which were found injured and nursed back to health. Enjoy the magnificent range of mammals, birds and reptiles from jaguars to howler monkeys, toucans to egrets and crocodiles to tree frogs, all in their natural habitat. You will spend approximately 1½ hours touring the zoo and educational center before returning via Belize City, finally arriving at the cruise ship pier.
