Your adventure begins with a 1  hour bus ride along the Transismic Highway through the city of Colon to the Pacific Coast where you will board a ferry that will transport you through part of the Panama Canal. View this great accomplishment from open areas on board the ferry. Go through the Miraflores Locks and Lake, pass through the Pedro Miguel locks and onto Gaillard Cut & cross the Continental Divide. Begin your journey with a scenic motor coach ride through the lush rain forest en route to the one of the largest forts built in Panama, the San Lorenzo Fort.Traverse a drawbridge across the Gatun Locks to reach the fort.  Enjoy a walking tour of this 16th century fortress, with amazing views of the Chagres River and the Caribbean Sea.   Learn the history of the pirates and buccaneers that sailed these waters for centuries and Captain Morgan s attack on San Lorenzo. Prior to the construction of the Panama Canal, the jungle area that is now the Gatun Lake had an abundance of wildlife. As the region was flooded to create the lake, animals took refuge in the mountain peaks, which are now the many islands that dot the renowned lake. You and your guide will slowly cruise the back channels and bays that make up this unique ecosystem. Glide past lush rainforests to a secluded region of the lake and witness first-hand the splendor and excitement of the jungle. Exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and crocodiles are just a few of the animals that you can view in their native surroundings. You will then have the opportunity to visit the Gatun Locks, the largest and most important of the 3 sets of locks at the Panama Canal.

During the building of the Canal by the United States, the plan arose to create a lake making the construction easier because lifting up the water level excavations did not have to be that profound. A large earthen wall was built in the Chagres River and several villages were flooded when the water rose to form the Gatun Lake. Already in these early days, the awareness existed of the importance of ecology in the Panama Canal, because it depends largely on rainwater for its operation. Therefore the watershed of the Panama Canal has always been well protected. This adventure starts with boarding your air-conditioned coach and transferring to the Melia Resort. This is a great tour for adventurous passengers.  Nature is the most common sight in the area where wildlife is abundant.
