Today you will walk along the dry riverbed of a canyon steeped in history. Along the way, your specialist guide will share native traditions and talk about the desert flora and fauna endemic to this area.

Conservationist Jaques Costeau once called the Sea of Cortez 'the largest natural aquarium in the world'. The local government has taken steps to protect the vast biodiversity found here by creating marine parks such as the one you'll visit today.

Your tour begins with a drive along the miles of desert coastline that fringe the rugged Baja Peninsula -- ideal for exploration.

Walk along Main Street, which was the very first paved road ever to exist in any of the California’s, seeing the houses from the late 19th century, the Town Hall building and the downtown plaza.

Travel by van for approximately one hour to San Javier -- the second-oldest town in both Californias.

A clambake is an authentic seafood specialty that you can try only in Loreto. To harvest Chocolata clams, divers swim about 500 yards off shore and then dive down 10-12 feet. An inner tube with a basket in the center serves to keep the harvested clams in water. The clams are placed on a bed of gravel with the shell opening pointing down. More gravel is placed on top, covering the clams. Dry branches of chamizo are spread over the gravel and set on fire. As the fire heats the shells the clams cook and open.

Take in stunning views of the Baja Peninsula as you cross from the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific Ocean. Your bilingual naturalist guide will explain how the peninsula was formed and brief you on the endemic flora and fauna you may see on the drive.

Discover a site where the impressive volcanic rocks of the eastern Baja Peninsula plummet into the Sea of Cortez, where you can snorkel and enjoy an extraordinary biological abundance and diversity. Balandra is a shoal bay where you can clearly see the bottom in more than 20 feet of water. This bay features eight attractive inlets and beautiful beaches -- one with the famous Mushroom Rock geological formation.

Travel 30 minutes by air-conditioned van to the El Serpentario Reptile & Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, where your naturalist guide shares his/her knowledge of the residents. Then, you will have free time to explore at your leisure.

Depart from Pichilingue and, as you travel to La Paz, you will see the surrounding desert as an intriguing, extremely beautiful ecosystem full of endless surprises. Over centuries, its flora and fauna have evolved endemic characteristics due to their relative isolation. Strange-looking valleys contain cardon and cirios cacti, elephant trees and thorny chollas forming a spiny green carpet on the sandy earth. Hawks, wrens, woodpeckers, roadrunners and Xantus hummingbirds live here, as well as desert bighorn, foxes, coyotes, pumas, desert mice and squirrels.

La Paz translates as 'peace' but it took the conquistadors almost 200 years to build their first settlement here in the face of stiff opposition from the Native population. Modern La Paz lives up to its name -- the capital of Baja California Sur is a lovely, welcoming city set on a calm bay along the Sea of Cortez.

One of the most impressive ocean creatures found here is the incredible whale shark, which is not a whale and barely qualifies as a shark, as it has a wonderfully docile nature. These immense creatures visit the warm waters off the coast of La Paz every winter, coming to feed and make the most of the abundant buffet of sea life in the bay.
