Admire the Plaza de Armas -- the unofficial epicenter of activity in this vibrant capital -- with its important architectural monuments and buildings. Among these are the Archbishop of Lima's house, with its elegant balconies, Government Palace, and a magnificent bronze fountain dating from 1650. You will also see the San Francisco Monastery, considered to be the most important religious monument of Lima, and the Convent of Santo Domingo, which contains the marble tomb holding the remains of Santa Rosa de Lima. Nearby, Osambela House, built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, is one of the city's most striking colonial buildings and captures the cultural and historical heritage of Lima.

You will visit the Cathedral of Lima, entering by the main Door of Forgiveness or one of two other massive doorways. Marvel at the magnificent Churriguerra altars and beautifully carved wooden choir stalls. There are a number of chapels, a baptistery and the tomb of the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro.

Tour Lima's historical center -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you enter the City of Kings, you'll head straight to the Plaza Mayor, where the Presidential Palace, City Hall and Archbishop's Palace are magnificent examples of Spanish colonial architecture.

Your tour starts with a panoramic drive along the malecón -- the oceanfront road where the constant breeze makes for very pleasant conditions. Continue past the new town and residential areas, where wealthy Ecuadorian exporters and industrialists make their homes.

The two-hour drive to Bahia de Caraquez follows a route lined with banana, rice, onion and mango plantations, as well as a dry tropical forest and a cloud forest.

Start your tour of discovery traveling along the road known as the Route to the Sun, passing the new residential areas where wealthy Ecuadorian seafood exporters live. You’ll head out into the countryside where you will be able to see the landscape change from dry and barren to lush and bountiful.

The Guacalillo Estuary is noted for its mangrove forests. In fact, four different species of mangrove are found in this area -- a group of unrelated woody plants that grow in protected tropical coasts. The mangrove is also a great habitat for many endemic birds such as the mangrove cuckoo, mangrove hummingbirds, mangrove vireo, Panama flycatcher and many herons and egrets. This particular mangrove forest is one of the most important in the mid-Pacific Coast for the conservation of the scarlet macaw.
