In the Eternal City, a panoramic drive takes you through the lovely Borghese Gardens and along Via Veneto -- Rome's famous, elegant and outrageously expensive shopping street. A slice of Roman life takes place among the fashionable sidewalk cafés, luxury shops and up-market hotels here.

Drive to the heart of Rome, passing St Paul's Basilica, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Circus Maximus and stopping at the Trevi Fountain.

In the Eternal City, enter the vast expanse of St Peter's Square through Bernini's Colonnade, and step into Christendom's largest church, St Peter's Basilica. In the apse is the splendid gilt and bronze throne, also designed by Bernini. Take time to see the Pietà, Michelangelo's masterpiece in white marble.

Begin your tour with a drive to Tarquinia, founded in the 7th century BC, and now known as a magnificent Etruscan burial ground. You will see the Palazzo Vitelleschi -- an excellent example of early Renaissance architecture, whose Archeological Museum houses the remains of the mysterious Etruscan population. Visit the necropolis, containing thousands of tombs dating from the 6th to the 1st century BC, many of which have not yet been explored.

In Rome you will visit the Catacombs, a curious underground maze of tunnels where the early Christians were buried. This is essentially a vast underground cemetery -- a series of subterranean passageways that form real labyrinths that are several miles long.

Meet your coach nearby and head for the beautiful Palazzo Brancaccio -- the last Roman patrician palace built in 1880 in the heart of the Eternal City. It stands on Colle Oppio, the ancient Roman hill near Emperor Nero's Domus Aurea, between the Colosseum and the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Its grounds are a beautiful old park surrounding the Roman ruins, with centuries-old plants and fountains, pine trees, palms and laurels. Here you can admire the small but charming Hunting Lodge, full of rich decorations. Inside the palace you'll find enchanting banquet rooms where Princess Cruises Mary Elisabeth Brancaccio gave sumptuous parties. Roman Holiday was filmed inside the halls of the Palazzo Brancaccio.

Begin with a brief minibus transfer to the lower station of the Dubrovnik Cable Car. Built in 1969, the cable car was popular with visitors and locals until civil war broke out in 1991. The cable car was destroyed and remained in complete disrepair until its recent restoration to service. Take the cable car up Srdj Hill, where you will disembark and enjoy some free time here. You'll be able to snap some wonderful photos and savor the breathtaking views over Dubrovnik's coastline and medieval walled city.

Enter Old Town Dubrovnik through the Pile Gate and visit the Dominican church and monastery. View the outside of the Rector's Palace.

Begin your outing with a boat ride alongside Dubrovnik’s magnificent and instantly recognizable City Walls, built between the 12th and 16th centuries. The walls are approximately 1½ miles long; they boast four fortresses and no less than 33 bastions.

Hop into a tuk-tuk for a fun and friendly ride to Pile Square at the north end of Dubrovnik's Old Town. Here you are given the option to return to the ship immediately with your Tuk-Tuk or to enjoy individual stay in Dubrovnik, walk along the Stradun -- the main street of Old Dubrovnik. "Those who seek paradise on earth," George Bernard Show once wrote, "should come to Dubrovnik." Today, Shaw might add that they should consider arriving by tuk-tuk and that Dubrovnik, recovered and restored after Croatia's bloody war for Independence, is the ideal place to renew one's faith in human nature and sheer tenacity.

Your walking tour begins with a stroll along the Stradun -- the main street of Dubrovnik. Keep an eye out for the Dominican church and the 15th-century Rector's Palace, which used to be seat of the Government for the in once-independent Republic of Dubrovnik (abolished by Napoleon in 1808).

Upon arrival at Villa Trinitá, leave the coach to explore the famous botanic gardens here. Amid the lava stones spewed from Mt Etna, you will find vegetable gardens, fruit trees and a mandarin plantation.

On foot you will visit the Cathedral Treasury, where you can admire the sumptuous Madonna golden mantel. There is a collection of important historical artwork donated by kings, bishops, noblemen, and even local people, as a token of faith and thanksgiving.

Majestic Mt Etna, at 11,000 feet, is Europe's largest active volcano. Leaving Messina, you will pass through many villages, all closely connected to the volcano's history.

Witness centuries of Mt Etna's destructive powers on a jaw-dropping 4x4 adventure. Drive through a lunar landscape of lava formations, summit craters, and cinder cones. Your camera will be working overtime when you visit the impenetrable cliffs of Valle del Bove, lava-carved caves and hike along Mount Sartorius. The ancient Romans believed that Vulcan, the god of fire, forged thunderbolts for various gods and heroes in his workshop deep inside the volcano we now call Mount Etna. Sometimes he worked so fast and furiously that the ground shook and sparks filled the sky creating a volcanic eruption. Of course, we now know that Etna's volcanic activity is the result of the northward motion of the African Plate colliding with the Eurasian Plate. Heading off road, your sturdy and reliable 4WD vehicle enables you to spend the day getting to know one of the world's major active volcanoes. Acclaimed as "brooding, dark and fascinating" in the popular book, "1,000 Places To See Before You Die," this seething example of nature's fury is home to a never-ending tableau of eye-popping scenery.

Leaving the port of Messina you will head towards the lovely village of Zafferana, driving south on the freeway through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves. At 1,800 feet above sea level, Santa Venerina village boasts enchanting, wild scenery, which becomes increasingly forbidding as you approach the park of Mt Etna.

Founded in the 6th century BC by Greeks from Naples, Taormina was subsequently occupied by the Romans. Today the influences of both civilizations are found in the ruins of the town's Greco-Roman theatre. The beauty of Taormina has been documented by writers for centuries, and the town is one of Sicily's most impressive resorts. It has all of the qualities that attract visitors -- incredible views, ancient ruins, and an abundance of quaint shops and boutiques. Many of its narrow cobblestone streets are closed to traffic, making the main part of Taormina accessible only on foot.

The beautiful Antica Masseria is an ancient farm not far from town and in the heart of the Sicilian countryside. On arrival at the baglio, you'll be welcomed by the charming Baroness Di Salvo, who will tell you about the ancient house. You'll visit the 18th-century baglio (country house) and the small church consecrated as a Sacred Family Oratory, where mass is still celebrated. Enjoy the shade of old palms, weeping willows, climbing roses and wisteria. The atmosphere of the farm and the house captures the essence of Italian nobility and the charm of a bygone era.

Drive through the main streets of Palermo and along the coast. You'll pass through Favorita Park -- former home of Ferdinand III of Bourbon, who fled from Naples in 1798 with his wife Marie Caroline. They took refuge here on the slopes of Mount Pellegrino and called their estate Favorita.

One of Sicily's most charming resorts is located on the northern coast of Sicily, halfway between Palermo and Capo d'Orlando. Cefalu is best explored on foot, so you'll leave your coach for a guided walking tour through this fine example of a medieval city, with narrow streets and elaborate architecture.

This excursion begins with a panoramic drive through of Palermo giving you the chance to admire its most beautiful monuments: Teatro Politeama, Teatro Massimo, the Quattro Canti, the Royal Palace and Piazza Pretoria. You'll then visit the impressive catacombs of the Capuchin Friars, where more than 8,000 mummified bodies of monks, noblemen and citizens are dressed in their original 15th-century clothes. The most disconcerting sight is the near-perfectly preserved body of Rosalia Lombardo, who died in 1920 at the tender age of two.

Tour the amazing city of Palermo, beginning with a ride from the pier to the downtown core, and discover a city that was a Phoenician stronghold and a Roman trading center. Reminders of all the city's conquerors exist still -- there are traces of Roman, Arab and Norman monuments to be seen. Visit the cathedral, built in 1185 by an English Archbishop. Under Muslim rule it became a mosque and was later re-consecrated to Christianity. In its chapel there is a silver urn containing the remains of St Rosalia.

This panoramic motor coach drive features the best of Palermo's sights at a relaxed pace. Begin with a ride to the central part of town. Highlights you will see include the Norman Palace, which began life in the Saracen period, but was altered by the Norman kings. View the magnificent cathedral, built in the 12th century by an archbishop, and transformed into a mosque during the Muslim era. Housing six royal tombs, the basilica was restored to the hands of Christianity by the Normans. The remains of Palermo's protector, St Rosalia, are stored in the chapel in an urn of pure silver.

Begin with the Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). Had this now-ruined temple ever been completed, it would have been one of the largest in the ancient world. The entablature was supported by 55-foot-tall columns, between which stood colossal statues. One of these is now on display in the Archeological Museum.

Learn about the way of life in a traditional Dalmatian village as you drive east from Split to Srijane. This village is situated near Cetina canyon, in the province of Poljica.

The Old Town of Split is built on and around the spectacular 4th-century Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian who was born in Salona (today's Solin).

Your excursion starts with a walking tour through Split's Old Town, originally built on and around the spectacular Roman Palace of Diocletian. The Roman Emperor was born in Salona in the 4th century.

You will stop within the park to admire its most beautiful area, which features numerous waterfalls and cascades. The largest of them all, Skradinski Buk, cascades over 17 natural barriers and falls 147 feet. This will certainly be a memorable experience -- the spectacular nature here is quite breathtaking.

A panoramic drive through the town of Split brings you to the Mestrovic Gallery. Ivan Mestrovic is the greatest Croatian sculptor of all time, and a large part of his impressive work is displayed here in his house, which is also a gallery.

Board a coach for a drive along the coast, then via a mountain road to Omis -- a small town on the Cetina River estuary. This swift mountain river meanders through canyons to reach the sea. Climb into a riverboat and drift to the old Radmanove Mlinice water mill. There's time to relax here and enjoy the atmosphere, or take a stroll through the forest.

Travel an hour by coach to reach the city of Aquileia. Since its foundation in 181 BC, Aquileia has always been a key port due to its strategic location between the Mediterranean Sea and the hinterland to the north. Art and handicrafts were its own primary industries.

Upon arrival in Ljubljana, you'll set out on a walking tour through the political, social and cultural capital of Slovenia. In 1511 and 1895, massive earthquakes struck the city causing a flurry of building activity. Today, this historic city center boasts an eclectic blend of Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. It is utterly charming.

Perched on a rock high above the Gulf of Trieste, Duino Castle was the private residence of the Princes della Torre e Tasso Duino. It is without a doubt among the most attractive castles in Europe. The castle is dominated by a 16th-century tower. Explore this beautiful castle with your guide and admire the memorabilia collected over the centuries. From the clifftop location, the gardens overlook a small fishing village and out to sea. Romantic avenues of trees are embellished with period statues and panoramic terraces.

You'll head straight to Piazza Unitá d'Italia -- the main square of Trieste and one of the largest in Europe -- to take photos of it most important buildings. Beautiful architecture evokes several bygone eras, so that the various façades essentially chronicle the story of Trieste.

Travel from Trieste to Tronchetto, Venice. Here, you will board a privately-chartered boat to reach the heart of Venice. Meet your local guide and set out to discover the magnificent architectural treasures of this legendary city. You will visit the Doges' Palace -- a symbol of the republic and a stunning example of fine Venetian-Gothic architecture. Cross the Bridge of Sighs and enter the prestigious palace whose sumptuous rooms contrast sharply with the damp prison cells on the other side of the bridge.

Begin with a jetfoil ride to the island of Capri, taking in several lovely sights, including Capri Town and Anacapri.

Take a panoramic drive through Naples, after which you'll head to Posillipo Hill, Mergellina, and past the famous Maschio Angioino Castle.Stop at the Piazza Plebiscito to see the outside of the Royal Palace and the San Carlo Opera House. Enjoy some free time to explore on your own.

Head out by motorcoach to the excavated city of Herculaneum -- known to the Italians as Ercolano. The upper class Romans built their beautiful villas and maintained luxurious properties in Herculaneum -- most of them overlooking the sea. Explore on foot with your guide. (S)he will explain how, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, hot ash charred or consumed all the wood of the structures in Pompeii (Herculaneum's more famous neighbor). Herculaneum's destruction was the result of a flood of hot mud that buried, sealed and protected entire buildings. This means that today there are still marvelous inlaid marble floors, mosaics, paintings, and carbonized wood exposed to visitors.

Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you'll discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash when Mt Vesuvius violently erupted in AD 79. It was a monumental natural disaster that killed thousands and entombed the city under ash. Explore the grounds on a 90-minute guided walk through the excavated city.
