Savor Juneau’s local flavors during this delightful tasting tour and cooking demonstration in Alaska’s capital city. As a prelude to the culinary immersion, you will drive a few miles out of town to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. It’s a great place to learn about the 13-mile-long river of ice and enjoy panoramic views of Mendenhall, the only glacier in southeast Alaska accessible by road. Back in Juneau, you will visit the Alaskan Brewing Company and discover how the brewery uses local ingredients to produce distinct ales and seasonal beers. A tasting of several beers follows. You can expect to pass a rushing mountain stream, feel the gentle mist of a cascading waterfall, hear the high-pitched whistle of a bald eagle and smell the fragrances of a secluded forest glen. Along the way, a naturalist will point out the natural wonders and describe the wildlife that flourishes here. The surrounding peaks are home to mountain goats, black bears, beavers and porcupine, and there is no telling what you may spot. As you follow the trail, you will pause at the best viewpoints to take in panoramic vistas of this expansive wilderness in the shadow of Mendenhall Glacier.

Cruise into the pristine waters off Juneau, an ideal area to spot humpback whales voraciously feeding to fatten up for their winter migration south. After settling into a spacious catamaran that has been specially designed with large windows for wildlife viewing, you will cruise into the island-studded waters of Stephens Passage. Against a majestic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, the onboard naturalist will describe the habits of the wildlife you may encounter, including humpback whales, the main attraction in these waters. Chances are, you will see these majestic creatures breaching the water’s surface and waving their flukes up and down as they dive for food. You may even spot the whales bubble-net feeding, a curious technique in which they force small fish upwards by blowing bubbles beneath them, which makes for easy feeding. Other frequently seen wildlife includes orcas, Stellar sea lions, Dall’s porpoise and bald eagles.

Raft down the magnificent Mendenhall River, a short but wonderfully picturesque river whose source is Mendenhall Lake, the terminus of massive Mendenhall Glacier. Following an orientation briefing, you will embark the raft and head downriver. If you are feeling ambitious, you may paddle along with your guide. If not, simply settle into the raft and enjoy the natural beauty in the shadow of Mendenhall Glacier as the guide does all the paddling. The scenery will be absolutely stunning, especially from your river perspective. Along the way, the guide will impart all sorts of fascinating facts about the area’s natural history, native lore and legends from the Tlingit people that first settled here thousands of years ago. After rafting, you will pause for snacks at an authentic Tlingit clan house.

Paddle through the tranquil, iceberg-dotted waters of Mendenhall Lake and pause at the face of Mendenhall Glacier to behold the enormous river of ancient, bluish ice. Following an orientation briefing, you will ease into a traditional native canoe that accommodates 12 people and begin your paddling adventure. Glacial waters feed the pristine lake and small icebergs that have calved from the glacier typically bob along the surface. The experience of canoeing through this unique landscape will leave with a greater appreciation of the glacier’s majesty. The view will be especially memorable when you stop at thundering Nugget Falls to stretch your legs and enjoy a snack. A relic of the last ice age, Mendenhall Glacier is named for Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, a physicist that helped determine the boundary between America and Canada when he was superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard and Geodetic Survey.

Soar over the scenic Tongass National Forest in a DeHavilland floatplane and land in a remote area frequented by black bears. Accompanied by a naturalist guide, hike to a viewing platform that overlooks a salmon stream, where bears can often be seen catching fish mid-leap. The experience offers stunning wilderness views from both the air and ground, along with the opportunity to witness black bears and bald eagles in their natural habitat. The floatplane flight alone provides a remarkable perspective of Alaska's wild beauty.

Take a scenic trolley ride to Potlatch Totem Park, home to a vast collection of hand-carved Native American totem poles. As you explore the park, you’ll learn about the rich symbolism behind the intricate designs, with some poles representing tribal clans and others portraying the connection between humans and spiritual beings. Watch artisans work on totem poles using traditional methods, and stroll through authentic clan houses that showcase the daily life of the native people in the 1800s. The park also features a surprising collection of vintage cars, adding an unexpected twist to your visit.

Although the western valley is primarily known for producing outstanding Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, you may be presented a sampling of other varietals, as Santa Ynez is by far the region’s largest viticulture region. The wineries in the warmer, drier eastern part of the valley tend to produce wines such as Zinfandels and Bordeaux blends. Sauvignon Blanc is another favorite offered served at the tastings. As you travel between wineries, you may recognize the setting from the wine-tasting road trip movie “Sideways,” an Academy Award-winner that was filmed in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Spend hours independently exploring Solvang, a delightful town with Danish roots that are still evident today. What you do will be entirely up to you, and there are plenty of options in the pedestrian-only downtown. Danes founded Solvang in 1911 and their influence is apparent in the thatched-roof buildings, traditional windmills and Little Mermaid statue that is a replica of the one in Copenhagen harbor. Architecture buffs might admire the half-timber construction style that reflects the buildings in 16th-century Denmark. Shoppers will love browsing Solvang’s more than 150 boutiques, while foodies may prefer to spend their time dining in one of the dozens of restaurants within easy walking distance. Enjoy a leisurely walk through Santa Barbara with a local architect that will point out and elaborate on the prevalent Mediterranean Mission-style architecture. Although you will only walk about a mile, there will be plenty to see. The architectural style reflects Santa Barbara’s Spanish-colonial heritage and Mediterranean climate. Elements such as clay-tiled roofs, white-washed plaster walls and wrought-iron accents became more prominent when the city was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1925. The architect will show you some of the more famous buildings this firm designed, including El Jardin, a mixed-use project with obvious Spanish influences and whimsical features. Ablitt Tower is another distinctive project as the footprint of this vacation-rental residence is a mere 20 x 20 feet. The building could only go up, and it rises spectacularly over an area full of restaurants, shops and nightclubs. The tower’s more than 50 windows offers magnificent views in every direction.

Settle in for a full immersion into the world of Santa Barbara wines at the Deep Sea Tasting Room, a delightful venue on Stearns Wharf. The Conway family owns the business and primarily serves Conway wines in the tasting room. As certified sommelier Gillian Conway shares her love of wine, you will gain a deeper understanding of how to properly sample wine, how to choose one to your liking and what wines pair best with certain cuisines. Even wine aficionados will find the experience wonderfully informative and entertaining. You will sample about a half dozen wines, while Gillian describes their characteristics. You might taste a Malbec named for Ringo, the Conway’s rescue dog, a crisp “Sea Horse” Sauvignon Blanc with citrusy notes and a fruity “Sea Star” Pinot Noir. All the grapes come from California vineyards, most of them in coastal Santa Barbara, an area that fog and sea breezes typically cool and influence the oceanic terroir.
