Discover Juneau’s scenic natural beauty by driving around the downtown waterfront and visiting Mendenhall Glacier, an ever-changing river of ice just outside of town. While traveling along the bustling waterfront, you can expect to see one historical building after another, some dating to the late 1890s, before Juneau was even incorporated. A short drive will bring you to the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, where you can stretch your legs and snap photos of the ancient glacier from various angles. Photo Point offers the closest view of the glacier. You might also venture out on the trail system for a first-hand look at this relatively new ecosystem that was once covered by ice. Later, at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, you may browse the exhibits, watch a short film, and enjoy more panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding ice field.

Savor Juneau’s local flavors during this delightful tasting tour and cooking demonstration in Alaska’s capital city. As a prelude to the culinary immersion, you will drive a few miles out of town to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. It’s a great place to learn about the 13-mile-long river of ice and enjoy panoramic views of Mendenhall, the only glacier in southeast Alaska accessible by road. Back in Juneau, you will visit the Alaskan Brewing Company and discover how the brewery uses local ingredients to produce distinct ales and seasonal beers. A tasting of several beers follows. Then, it’s off to local Alaskan restaurant. Here you can snack on authentic Alaskan dishes while enjoying the view.

As you follow the trail toward the 13-mile-long river of ice, a naturalist will explain how the glacier has receded over the past century and how the indigenous flora has been used for food, shelter and medicine.

Experience Alaska’s spectacular natural beauty on an exhilarating hike through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area. Your adventure begins not far from Juneau on a meandering trail through a valley that will stimulate your senses and leave you with an even greater respect for Mother Nature. You can expect to pass a rushing mountain stream, feel the gentle mist of a cascading waterfall, hear the high-pitched whistle of a bald eagle and smell the fragrances of a secluded forest glen. Along the way, a naturalist will point out the natural wonders and describe the wildlife that flourishes here. The surrounding peaks are home to mountain goats, black bears, beavers and porcupine, and there is no telling what you may spot. As you follow the trail, you will pause at the best viewpoints to take in panoramic vistas of this expansive wilderness in the shadow of Mendenhall Glacier.

Cruise into the pristine waters off Juneau, an ideal area to spot humpback whales voraciously feeding to fatten up for their winter migration south. After settling into a spacious catamaran that has been specially designed with large windows for wildlife viewing, you will cruise into the island-studded waters of Stephens Passage. Against a majestic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, the onboard naturalist will describe the habits of the wildlife you may encounter, including humpback whales, the main attraction in these waters. Chances are, you will see these majestic creatures breaching the water’s surface and waving their flukes up and down as they dive for food. You may even spot the whales bubble-net feeding, a curious technique in which they force small fish upwards by blowing bubbles beneath them, which makes for easy feeding. Other frequently seen wildlife includes orcas, Stellar sea lions, Dall’s porpoise and bald eagles.

Raft down the magnificent Mendenhall River, a short but wonderfully picturesque river whose source is Mendenhall Lake, the terminus of massive Mendenhall Glacier. Following an orientation briefing, you will embark the raft and head downriver. If you are feeling ambitious, you may paddle along with your guide. If not, simply settle into the raft and enjoy the natural beauty in the shadow of Mendenhall Glacier as the guide does all the paddling. The scenery will be absolutely stunning, especially from your river perspective. Along the way, the guide will impart all sorts of fascinating facts about the area’s natural history, native lore and legends from the Tlingit people that first settled here thousands of years ago. After rafting, you will pause for snacks at an authentic Tlingit clan house.

Paddle through the tranquil, iceberg-dotted waters of Mendenhall Lake and pause at the face of Mendenhall Glacier to behold the enormous river of ancient, bluish ice. Following an orientation briefing, you will ease into a traditional native canoe that accommodates 12 people and begin your paddling adventure. Glacial waters feed the pristine lake and small icebergs that have calved from the glacier typically bob along the surface. The experience of canoeing through this unique landscape will leave with a greater appreciation of the glacier’s majesty. The view will be especially memorable when you stop at thundering Nugget Falls to stretch your legs and enjoy a snack. A relic of the last ice age, Mendenhall Glacier is named for Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, a physicist that helped determine the boundary between America and Canada when he was superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard and Geodetic Survey.

Soar over the scenic Tongass National Forest in a DeHavilland floatplane and land in a remote area frequented by black bears. Accompanied by a naturalist guide, hike to a viewing platform that overlooks a salmon stream, where bears can often be seen catching fish mid-leap. The experience offers stunning wilderness views from both the air and ground, along with the opportunity to witness black bears and bald eagles in their natural habitat. The floatplane flight alone provides a remarkable perspective of Alaska's wild beauty.

Take a scenic trolley ride to Potlatch Totem Park, home to a vast collection of hand-carved Native American totem poles. As you explore the park, you’ll learn about the rich symbolism behind the intricate designs, with some poles representing tribal clans and others portraying the connection between humans and spiritual beings. Watch artisans work on totem poles using traditional methods, and stroll through authentic clan houses that showcase the daily life of the native people in the 1800s. The park also features a surprising collection of vintage cars, adding an unexpected twist to your visit.

Cheer for world-class lumberjacks as they compete in high-energy events like pole climbing, log rolling, and axe throwing in this thrilling showdown between Alaska’s finest and British Columbia’s top woodsmen.
