Nieuw Statendam

Drive across the desert from Alexandria to Cairo, learning about Egypt as you travel. It is approximately three hours to the capital city and, when you arrive, you will proceed to the Pyramids of Giza. The Cheops Pyramid is the sole survivor among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Step inside one of the pyramids for an interior view of these colossal monuments. Your Egyptologist guide will share with you the history of these engineering marvels as you discover the inner passageways.

It is approximately a three-hour ride along the desert road to Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Upon arrival in this vast city, you will first visit the great Pyramids of Giza. The largest of these, Cheops, is the only remaining one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Stand beside these incredible Egyptian monuments and marvel at their size. View the Sphinx—part lion, part man, carved from a natural rock—190 feet long and 66 feet tall at its highest point. Its face, which is 16 feet above the ground, looks towards the rising sun in the east.

An approximately 3½-hour motor coach ride along the desert road leads from Alexandria to Sakkara—the vast necropolis of ancient Memphis. The pyramids here include the distinctive Step Pyramid, dating back to 2686 BC and believed to be the oldest stone structure on earth. It was built at the decree of King Zoser and thus began the tradition of pyramid building.

Depart the ship for an approximately two-hour drive to the small coastal village of El Alamein. Upon arrival, proceed to the El Alamein War Museum, containing a collection of uniforms, memorabilia and photographs relating to the Battle of El Alamein and the North Africa campaigns in general. There is also a diorama display that shows the main paths of advance and retreat until the Axis forces surrendered to the Allies in Tunis in 1943. Outside the museum, there is a collection of tanks, artillery and hardware.

The history and archeological significance of Alexandria is highlighted on this guided tour celebrating the city’s iconic monuments and treasured artifacts.

In the Eternal City, a panoramic drive takes you through the lovely Borghese Gardens and along Via Veneto -- Rome's famous, elegant and outrageously expensive shopping street. A slice of Roman life takes place among the fashionable sidewalk cafés, luxury shops and up-market hotels here.

Drive to the heart of Rome, passing St Paul's Basilica, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Circus Maximus and stopping at the Trevi Fountain.

In the Eternal City, enter the vast expanse of St Peter's Square through Bernini's Colonnade, and step into Christendom's largest church, St Peter's Basilica. In the apse is the splendid gilt and bronze throne, also designed by Bernini. Take time to see the Pietà, Michelangelo's masterpiece in white marble.

Begin your tour with a drive to Tarquinia, founded in the 7th century BC, and now known as a magnificent Etruscan burial ground. You will see the Palazzo Vitelleschi -- an excellent example of early Renaissance architecture, whose Archeological Museum houses the remains of the mysterious Etruscan population. Visit the necropolis, containing thousands of tombs dating from the 6th to the 1st century BC, many of which have not yet been explored.

In Rome you will visit the Catacombs, a curious underground maze of tunnels where the early Christians were buried. This is essentially a vast underground cemetery -- a series of subterranean passageways that form real labyrinths that are several miles long.

Meet your coach nearby and head for the beautiful Palazzo Brancaccio -- the last Roman patrician palace built in 1880 in the heart of the Eternal City. It stands on Colle Oppio, the ancient Roman hill near Emperor Nero's Domus Aurea, between the Colosseum and the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Its grounds are a beautiful old park surrounding the Roman ruins, with centuries-old plants and fountains, pine trees, palms and laurels. Here you can admire the small but charming Hunting Lodge, full of rich decorations. Inside the palace you'll find enchanting banquet rooms where Princess Cruises Mary Elisabeth Brancaccio gave sumptuous parties. Roman Holiday was filmed inside the halls of the Palazzo Brancaccio.

As you step back 2,000 years into the past at the sanctuary of Olympia, picture the area crowded with athletes, orators, merchants, and philosophers. At the birthplace of the Olympic Games, it's easy to imagine the roar of the spectators as the athletes took their marks on the marble starting blocks, and to picture the temples, treasuries, porticoes, and statues of the day. The scene was dominated by the Temple of Zeus, with its 40-foot statue of the god, the ruins of which you will see today.

The park-like grounds of the sanctuary of Olympia will take you back 2,000 years to a time when this very area was crowded with athletes, orators, merchants and philosophers. The backdrop was the Temple of Zeus -- famous for its forty-foot statue of the god himself, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple lies in ruins today. As you explore, it is quite easy to imagine the roar of the spectators as the athletes pitted their own abilities against those of worthy rivals. With some help from your guide, the remains of temples, treasuries, porticoes and statues help to bring the site to life.

This is where you'll find the Olympia Gi Winery, known for its magnificent location. Tour the vineyards and learn about the different varieties and cultivation methods inspired by the traditions of the ancient Greeks. This modern family-run winery produces quality vintages. Take in the beauty and charm of the vineyards while enjoying a taste of Olympia Gi wine.

The Mediterranean isle of Cyprus has a curiously divided personality. Located 174 miles east of Greece and 47 miles south of Turkey Cyprus has long been shaped by both ancient cultures. Nowhere are these influences seen more clearly than in Cyprus’s delicious cuisine.

Drive through Phassouri citrus groves and vineyards to the ancient city of Kourion, a beautiful and unspoiled spot perched high on a cliff. Take in the dazzling views of the ruins and the sea below. Kourion, one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, is situated in a conspicuous topographic position. It is built on a rise with three steep, almost vertical, sides. In his writings, Herodotus referred to the widely accepted notion that Greeks from Argos founded Kourion. During the 4th century AD, Kourion was destroyed by earthquakes.

Enjoy a relaxing drive through the vineyards and orchards of the Phassouri citrus groves. The day begins with a visit to the main historical attraction of this area -- the ancient ruins of the city of Kourion. This impressive Greco-Roman site features remnants of pavement mosaics, including the fine four-panel design in the central room at the House of Eustolios.

The last divided capital city in the world, after the fall of Berlin Wall, is the city of Nicosia -- right here in Cyprus. The Green Line has divided north from south since 1974. Travel through Phassouri's citrus groves and vineyards to reach Petra tou Romiou -- the symbol of Pafos city. Leaving the port of Messina you will head towards the lovely village of Zafferana, driving south on the freeway through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves. At 1,800 feet above sea level, Santa Venerina village boasts enchanting, wild scenery, which becomes increasingly forbidding as you approach the park of Mt Etna.

Founded in the 6th century BC by Greeks from Naples, Taormina was subsequently occupied by the Romans. Today the influences of both civilizations are found in the ruins of the town's Greco-Roman theatre. The beauty of Taormina has been documented by writers for centuries, and the town is one of Sicily's most impressive resorts. It has all of the qualities that attract visitors -- incredible views, ancient ruins, and an abundance of quaint shops and boutiques. Many of its narrow cobblestone streets are closed to traffic, making the main part of Taormina accessible only on foot.

The beautiful Antica Masseria is an ancient farm not far from town and in the heart of the Sicilian countryside. On arrival at the baglio, you'll be welcomed by the charming Baroness Di Salvo, who will tell you about the ancient house. One of Sicily's most charming resorts is located on the northern coast of Sicily, halfway between Palermo and Capo d'Orlando. Under Muslim rule it became a mosque and was later re-consecrated to Christianity. In its chapel there is a silver urn containing the remains of St Rosalia.

This panoramic motor coach drive features the best of Palermo's sights at a relaxed pace. Begin with a ride to the central part of town. Highlights you will see include the Norman Palace, which began life in the Saracen period, but was altered by the Norman kings. View the magnificent cathedral, built in the 12th century by an archbishop, and transformed into a mosque during the Muslim era. Begin with the Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). Had this now-ruined temple ever been completed, it would have been one of the largest in the ancient world. The ancient agora, or marketplace, in Athens was once an eclectic mix of private housing and public spaces, until it was thoroughly re-organized by Peisistratus in the 6th century BC. As one did in the ancient world, Peisistratus pulled rank and continued to live on the agora, but he wasted no time evicting the other residents turning the area into the epicenter of Athenian government. He also built a drainage system, fountains and a temple to the Olympian gods. Cimon later improved the agora with new buildings, trees, and temples to Hephaestus, Zeus and Apollo. The law courts were located here as well, and ancient custom dictated that when a court case was being heard, any citizen who happened to be passing by could be forced to serve as a juror. The Scythian Archers -- an early version of a mercenary police force -- often wandered through the agora specifically looking for jurors. Needless to say, the area was given a wide berth by those who were at all gainfully employed. Because history repeats itself, during Byzantine times, Athens' agora once again became a residential area and now is one of the city's most visited landmarks.
