Most of these characters are buried in the Gold Rush Cemetery. While stopping there, you will see the final resting place of con man Soapy Smith who died in a shootout in 1898 and the grave of huckster Martin Itjen, who caused a stir by chaining the world’s largest gold nugget to a tree. Afterwards, you can discuss what you’ve seen while sampling a selection of local beers at a microbrewery.

Pass through the visually stunning countryside in the Puna district just outside Hilo, where you will see lava fields from past eruptions and an extraordinary black-sand beach composed of lava fragments. According to legend, the volatile Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele lives in the district’s Kīlauea volcano. She not only creates new land, but also destroys what stands in the path of the lava, which is known as “frozen fire” once it cools and hardens. However, the historical Painted Church was spared during Kīlauea’s eruption in 1990 when the entire structure was lifted off its foundation and moved to safety. While browsing the wooden church, which features wonderful painted ceiling frescoes, you will hear more about its salvation. You will also visit a newly formed black-sand beach to learn intriguing details about the volcanic eruption that created it. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to shop for locally made merchandise and meander along Hilo Bay.

Gain an understanding of the Big Island’s history through attractions that highlight the life of the early Hawaiians and the influence of Catholic missionaries. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will offer a glimpse into the early culture, as it was a place of refuge for those that had violated the sacred laws known as kapu. There, you will see a temple where criminals could be absolved of their transgressions and safely return to society. To complement the experience, you will visit the 19th-century Painted Church. At Kona Joe Coffee, you will learn about the patented cultivation process that allows the trellised Arabica coffee trees to grow upright like grapevines, which ensures uniform sun exposure. The result is a superior organic coffee bean with an enhanced taste and body, as you will discover by sampling a fresh-brewed cup. You will be treated to another sampling at the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory, the first plantation in the state to grow and process 100% Hawaiian cacao chocolate. While touring the orchards, you will see how the cacao is nurtured and then witness the various steps of production in the factory. A tasting follows, during which you might sample delectable plumeria-shaped pieces of chocolate, bite-size cacao nibs and dark criollo chocolate with a complex earthy character. Your adventure starts by viewing historical points of interest while off shore from the village of Kailua-Kona. While zipping down the coast on these fast and fun Zodiac Hurricanes, you will stop to interact with dolphins and other marine life. The dolphins that are seen on a daily basis are the Hawaiian Spinner dolphins. You may encounter Pacific Bottlenose and Spotted dolphins. As well as the seasonal Humpback whales that migrate yearly from Alaska (Jan-Apr), you may also find pilot whales, false killer whales and other rare, elusive whales that live here year-round.
